Take a deep dive into the luminous world of borosilicate glass in this 5-hour intensive introduction to hard-glass torchworking. No prior glass experience is required—this workshop is designed for curious beginners as well as returning students who want to build stronger fundamentals and expand their technical range.
You’ll learn the essentials of working with color and clear borosilicate rods, mastering flame control, shaping, and the use of specialized tools. Over the course of the day, you’ll make two flat pendants and an optical dome pendant, each exploring different techniques for shaping, color application, and depth.
All tools, materials, and safety equipment are provided. You’ll work at a professional torch station with personalized guidance to help you develop precision, confidence, and creative freedom in your work.
Topics covered:
Introduction to Borosilicate Glass
- Properties of hard glass and how it differs from soft glass
- Overview of color rods, transparents, and striking colors
- Understanding flame chemistry and heat zones
Tools and Materials
- Torch setup, marvers, graphite pads, and marble molds
- Proper use of oxygen, propane, and ventilation systems
- Safety glasses, posture, and hand positioning for endurance
Techniques and Demonstrations
- Gathering, shaping, and forming pendants and marbles
- External color application and surface design
- Implosion techniques for internal patterning
- Introduction to stringer work: pulling fine lines and using them for detail and decoration
- Working with gravity and heat to achieve symmetry and polish
Hands-On Creation
- Pendant #1: Flat pendant with layered external color
- Pendant #2: Flat pendant with raked stringer embellishment
- Pendant #3: Optical dome pendant with implosion or lens effect
Finishing and Annealing
- Kiln-annealing techniques for strength and clarity
This extended format allows for more one-on-one attention and exploration of technique. You’ll leave with 3 completed pieces, a foundational understanding of hard-glass work, and the confidence to continue your practice in open studio or intermediate classes.
About the Instructor
Deenie Wallace began working with borosilicate glass in 2003. Over the years, she has sold her lampwork designs to enthusiastic collectors worldwide. Known for her distinctive styles and advanced use of color techniques, her work is sought after for its advanced level of craftsmanship and beauty. Deenie holds a BFA in Intermedia from Pacific Northwest College of Art. She is also a local filmmaker, creative technologist, and wild plant medicine enthusiast.
